While Marc Jacobs led the military charge for spring, elsewhere, designers were clearly in more of a pacifist mood, as the army's favourite shade was thoroughly reworked for Civvy Street.

Ralph Lauren went cuckoo for khaki, choosing 'olive drab' (the darker green shade that became popular during World War I) for the majority of the 50-odd looks in his safari-inspired SS15 collection, showing everything from shirt dresses to ball gowns, while at Jason Wu and Chanel, olive suede coordinates looked chic and modern.

Now the high street has followed suit, providing a wealth of green garms to build your spring/summer wardrobe around.

Here are our top 10 buys to court the khaki colour trend...

IN THE TRENCHES

Give your stiff beige trench a rest this spring in favour of a sleek khaki coat - opt for a soft cut and an even softer fabric for maximum day-to-night adaptability. The Girls On Film Khaki Satin Trench, £50 (www.little-mistress.com), will look as chic belted (but unbuttoned) over a pastel princess dress as it will loose over ripped jeans and stilettos.

SHIFT GEAR

Khaki dresses take one of two routes this season. For the office (or any occasion where that tricky 'smart casual' dress code has been decreed), try a smart, fitted shift with subtle patch pocket or button detailing. Dorothy Perkins' Suede Khaki Dress, £65 (available late May; www.dorothyperkins.com), looks great against tanned skin, but will see you through to autumn too.

DRESS DOWN

Alternatively, an oversized olive dress will become your go-to for chilled spring days. The balloon shape of the Anna Aura Khaki Dress, £135 (www.peterhahn.co.uk), echoes Mr Lauren's catwalk output but is, thankfully, a lot more wearable day-to-day. Liven it up with bright accessories - chartreuse makes a great match.

TOP RANK

Add a hint of the oriental trend to your look with Miss Selfridge's Khaki Split Tunic, £30 (www.missselfridge.com). Whether over safari shorts, chinos or jeans, it's smarter than a long T-shirt and the splits allow better movement, so you won't get any annoying crinkly bits where your waistband shows through.

JUMP TO IT

A khaki jumpsuit may bring to mind images of Tom Cruise in Top Gun, but don't worry, the latest olive all-in-ones are way more classy. Like the Girls On Film Khaki 3/4 Sleeve Jumpsuit, £45 (www.little-mistress.com), a slouchy number that you can style up with metallic heels and chunky gold jewellery.

PLAY IT AGAIN

On the more casual end of the all-in-one spectrum, a linen or cotton playsuit like House of Fraser's Therapy Playsuit, currently reduced to £27 from £45 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), is perfect for full-on festival days or picnics in the park. For a more feminine feel, add fuchsia flats or a pastel tote.

BIKER GROOVE

Your black leather biker jacket may be the wardrobe equivalent of your favourite child, but it doesn't really work on sweltering days, does it? The Pam & Gela Green Army Twill Jacket, £250 (www.harveynichols.com), however, is a winner for summer, its slightly faded hue providing major matching potential with acid brights and jewel tones alike.

JOIN THE HAREM

Subtler than those hippy-dippy trousers that pool around your knees, East's Khaki Satin Harem Pants, £99 (www.east.co.uk), are more like a luxe version of the ever-popular jogger. They're light and breezy enough for day, worn with sandals and a gypsy blouse, or elevated for evening with a silk tee, statement necklace and clutch.

THE HEEL DEAL

Bring khaki to the party with a pair of sexy stilettos, like Topshop's Perfection Premium Sandals, £98 (www.topshop.com). They'll make a stylish pairing with your favourite LBD - add yellow or rose gold jewellery to lift the moody hues.

WEDGE IT IN

A pair of sturdy wedges is a must for summer, and they don't get much sturdier than Dune's Kassie Tan Elasticated Eve Wedge Sandals, £110 (www.dunelondon.com). Featuring a trendy track sole and comfortable elasticated upper, they're the ideal accessory to complete your khaki clothing spree.

Star prints were the, well, star of many a spring fashion week presentation, not least at Tommy Hilfiger's festival-themed offering, where a trio of billowing, diaphanous maxi dresses closed the show. Shine in your own star-spangled frock with the mercifully less see-through Galaxy Dress, £72 (www.sisterjane.com).

Clarks celebrates 190 years of shoemaking this year and, to mark the occasion, the brand is trotting out a reissue of its most enduring footwear, based on an Egyptian shoe sported by off-duty British soldiers in 1940s Cairo. The new unisex 'Made in England' Desert Boot, £250, is out at the end of May (www.clarks.co.uk).
