£9,000 fine for dirty pub

THE owners of a Belbroughton pub have been prosecuted.

Ann Vannessa Judd, Dennis Richard Judd and James Richard Judd, the owners of the Four Winds public house in Belbroughton, were fined £9,000 after pleading guilty at Redditch magistrates court to three offences against food hygiene legislation.

The joint owners broke three offences under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations Act in failing to keep the pub clean and in a good state of repair, ensuring that equipment used in the kitchen was clean and in good condition and ensuring that food was protected against contamination.

“The level of fine imposed by magistrates on the owners of this pub illustrates the seriousness with which they viewed the failure to keep it clean and provide safe food to its customers."
Councillor Peter Whittaker, the portfolio holder for strategic housing and the environment

In addition, costs of £1,340 were awarded to Bromsgrove District Council, which brought the prosecution.

The contraventions were discovered during a routine food hygiene inspection carried out by council environmental health officers in January 2007.

Despite requests, warnings and two further visits, conditions remained so poor that the council health chiefs felt they had no alternative but to instigate legal proceedings.

Councillor Peter Whittaker, the portfolio holder for strategic housing and the environment, said: "The level of fine imposed by magistrates on the owners of this pub illustrates the seriousness with which they viewed the failure to keep it clean and provide safe food to its customers.

"The result should reassure the people of Bromsgrove that the council will not hesitate to prosecute businesses that do not comply with minimum standards of food safety."
