RALLY: Julie Kirkbride with Jenny and Graham Ryder and their 1946 Wolseley 8, at the start of the 2008 Parliamentary Classic Car Run.

VINTAGE car enthusiasts Jenny and Graham Ryder were invited to enter their 1946 Wolseley 8 in the annual Parliamentary Classic Car Run, which raised about £5,000 for charity.

The 2008 event was held in March and it commemorated the diamond wedding anniversary of the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

Sixty places were allocated to represent their 60 years of marriage.

A range of British vehicles, which would have been in production in 1947, gathered in London from as far away as the Channel Islands.

Graham, from Bromsgrove, said: "At noon on the appointed day, owners and vehicles assembled at Horse Guards Parade where a lively atmosphere was building up in anticipation. Julie Kirkbride took time out of her busy schedule to meet car owners and chatted happily to her constituents. Most participants had entered into the spirit of the event by wearing clothing reminiscent of the 1940s."

“As the Wolseley 8 has a top speed of 45mph, the drive to London was split over two days, with motorways only being used for part of the return journey."

HRH the Duke of Kent travelled with the motorcade in a 1955 Rolls Royce and spoke to many of the participants during the afternoon and officially inspected the vehicles on behalf of the queen.

Leukaemia Research and the Stroke Association were to benefit from sponsorship and donations.

Graham added: "As the Wolseley 8 has a top speed of 45mph, the drive to London was split over two days, with motorways only being used for part of the return journey. A total mileage of 282 was recorded and the 1946 vehicle performed excellently on her royal excursion."
