Issues affecting our older population were put firmly on the pre-election agenda at a special event hosted by Churchill Retirement Living. The specialist developer invited the local MP Margot James and representatives from each of the main political parties to meet with existing and prospective Owners at Spicer Lodge in Stourbridge and address the issues important to them in a lively ‘Question Time’ style debate.

The events come on the back of a recent survey by the retirement developer, which found that three-quarters of over-60s believe they are “unseen and unheard” by the major political parties, while one in ten are so disenfranchised that they aren’t certain they’ll vote in this year’s general election.

Over 20 voters aged 60 and above attended the event to put their questions to Margot James MP (Conservative), Pete Lowe (Labour) and James Carver (UKIP). Topics raised included foreign policy, threat of terrorism, immigration and the state of the economy. Each of the candidates outlined their key policies and lively discussions were had regarding the impact of the recent budget announcement, pension reforms and community values.

Alan Perry, Regional Managing Director for Churchill Retirement Living, said: “It is really important that, as Election Day draws closer, the voice of the more mature voter is heard. We understand the specific issues that matter to our older generation and felt that it was really important to provide a platform on which these could be addressed. The response to the event was really positive and we very much appreciate Margot, Pete and James taking time out of their busy schedules to take part. We had a lively discussion, which everyone found informative and enjoyable.”
