Victoria Wood has revealed she is often the victim of mistaken identity.

The funnywoman admitted people have inaccurately recognised her as fellow comediennes Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders – and even Jo Brand.

“People think I’m Dawn French, they think I’m Jo Brand, sometimes they think I’m Jennifer Saunders, sometimes they’re just not sure and they think I’m one of those people,” she said.

Victoria, who wrote the stage musical That Day We Sang and directed its BBC Two adaptation, starring Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball, also hosted the accompanying documentary, That Musical We Made and pretended to go along with her mistaken identity during filming.

“I just go, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’. In fact, when I was filming the documentary, somebody came up and said, ‘Where’s Jennifer then?’ and I said, ‘She’s not here’.

“They said, ‘Are you doing a show? Where are you doing it?’ and I said, ‘Around the corner.’ And I thought, ‘Please go away, because they’re going to walk around the corner and see there is no French and Saunders show at the Opera House in Manchester’.”

Victoria, who took part in this year’s Great Comic Relief Bake Off, revealed judge Paul Hollywood was less intimidating in real life.

“Paul Hollywood is not quite so scary [in real life]. Once you’ve seen him behind the tent, smoking, you’re not so scared of him,” she said.

She added: “I love the show. I always watch it, I think it’s a really good show, it’s a really good format – people doing something they really like, that they’re good at. It’s a very good-hearted show.”

That Day We Sang, starring Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball, is available on DVD and digital download now.
