THE last major work to be composed by Sir Edward Elgar will form the centrepiece of this year’s birthday celebration concert for the world famous Worcestershire composer.
Celebrating 158 years since his birth, the Elgar Birthday Concert at Malvern’s Forum Theatre on Saturday, May 30, will feature his Cello Concerto.
It will be performed by soloist Guy Johnston, a former winner of the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition.
Before the concerto, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will play Elgar’s much loved Serenade for Strings and then after it, his Enigma Variations. These paint individual portraits of those closest to the composer and Elgar began the work whilst living in Malvern.
The orchestra will be conducted by Ben Palmer.
Music by Elgar’s contemporary, Gustav Holst, will open the evening. His Somerset Rhapsody was inspired by English folksong and was the piece with which he first made his name.
The concert begins at 7.45pm.
