REVIEW

FOR those of you who like a good three-hankie cry-fest, this moving adaptation of the novel by M.L. Stedman will be right up your street.

The Light Between Oceans sees Michael Fassbender's WWI veteran returns home to Australia for some peace and isolation, accepting a position as a lighthouse keeper on the isle of Janus Rock, heralding a swooning, emotional story. He marries Alicia Vikander and, fearing she can't have children after she miscarries, they decide to not report the arrival of a baby in an adrift row boat. Guilt sets in when Fassbender meets the baby's real mother (Rachel Weisz).

This sounds like the plot to a TV movie 'Issue of the Week', albeit one with the best cast a movie like that could buy and a cast who keep too much contrivance at bay. Some stunning photography and small, delicately touching moments from director Derek Cianfrance complete an attractive picture.

****4/5 stars (Very good/lots to enjoy). Showing at: Empire Great Birmingham Park, Odeons, Showcase and Cineworlds.
