THREE talented young musicians have made it through four competitive rounds and now one is set to become BBC Young Musician 2018 when the final is staged at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in May.

The trio will each perform a full concerto in front of television cameras and a distinguished panel of judges and one will become BBC Young Musician 2018.

This year sees the 40th anniversary of the competition and ever since that first final in 1978, the competition has developed a reputation for its ability to launch a seriously impressive career.

Star names such as Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti, Natalie Clein, Nicholas Daniel, Benjamin Grosvenor, Stephen Hough, Tasmin Little and Jennifer Pike are all alumni.

Now this year’s finalists will perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, on Sunday, May 14, to see who can become this year’s winner.

This event will be broadcast on BBC television and radio at 4pm and will also include a performance by BBC Young Musician winner in 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

Nick Reed, Chief Executive THSH, said: “We are delighted that the grand final of the BBC Young Musician 2018 will return to Symphony Hall for it’s 40th Anniversary.

Each year, THSH connects thousands of young people and adults to a world of music and performance and in choosing our world-renowned venue the BBC recognises this work and commitment to inspiring future generations. We hope that in years to come the award winners will return to the city and educate the next generation of talented young people.”
