MANY local farmers are now beginning to make final preparations for their livestock and produce for what is widely regarded as the country’s major agricultural showpiece - The Royal Three Counties Show.

This is also a special year for the show as its celebrates a Diamond Anniversary - 60 years on its permanent site at the foot of the Malvern Hills after progressing from a small show held not only in Worcestershire, but also the neighbouring counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire in past years.

The appearance of two Devon cows and two Shropshire sheep at the magnificent Worcester Cathedral marked the official launch of the anniversary and this year’s show which takes place from June 15 to 17.

The prized livestock, all former champions at the show, were at the cathedral along with show representatives and local dignitaries from the three counties, for a special service and blessing given by the Bishop of Dudley, the Rt Rev Graham Usher.

In his address he said the launch marked a special day, celebrating rural life and all those who work in agriculture. He added that the show itself was the pride of our region and he hoped it would be blessed this year with three sunny days.

Diana Walton, Head of Shows at the Three Counties, said this year’s event was a special one in terms of its anniversary and that Worcestershire was the host county.

“It’s a truly exciting year for Worcestershire as we will be showcasing the very best the county has to offer.

“Our aim is to make rural life more accessible and to invite people to ‘Meet the Countryside’. We want to celebrate our wonderful farming communities, showing off their beauty and sense of community as well as the wide variety of fantastic livestock and equine breeds. We’re looking forward to championing the best of British farming and rural life.”

BBC television Countryfile presenter and Gloucestershire farmer, Adam Henson, was also there in his role as ambassador for the show.

He said: “I’m so proud to be the ambassador for this wonderful celebration of rural life. Having these magnificent creatures inside the stunning cathedral is truly a sight to behold.”

He added: “Each year I love to see the passion visitors have for the countryside and the enthusiasm of children meeting beasts of all shapes and sizes with wide eyes of wonder is contagious. I’m sure this 60th year will certainly be the best yet.”

With a feast of farming, fine food and family entertainment, more than 90,000 visitors are expected at the highlight of the agricultural calendar next month.

Among other attractions at this year’s show will be appearances by favourites from the world’s longest running radio soap opera, The Archers - which has its roots in the north Worcestershire area, county based author, broadcaster and antiques expert Phillip Serrell - who will be offering anecdotal stories in the Wellington Boot Theatre as well as valuations, and visitors will also be able to meet spectacular former Grand National winner Pineau De Re, which was trained in Worcestershire.

The Royal Three Counties Show will take place from Friday, June 15 until Sunday, June 17 with tickets now on sale.

Advanced tickets are from £19 for adults and £5 for children, family tickets are also available.
