A UNIQUE hobby group for radio enthusiasts has secured a grant of more than £5,000.

The Worcester Radio Amateurs Association (WRAA), established in October 2006, is celebrating after being given £5,320 from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme. The group, the only amateur radio enthusiast organisation in the Worcestershire area, will use the cash to spread its wings into neighbouring towns.

"We are keen to promote amateur radio as a life-long hobby," said club chairman Pete Badham, adding that all members were "absolutely chuffed" with the grant. "We want to show everyone just what radio means in today's world, where many technical advances are taken for granted. The money means we can move forward. We are now solvent enough to take it to the next stage - we can offer the training to people outside the club and go out into more schools."

As well as regular meetings at their radio shack' in Hallow, the club works closely with the Scouts and Guides, teaching youngsters how to use radio communication while camping.

In 2007, the club took part in the Scouting movement's centenary celebrations. Members set up a radio station which enabled several hundred Scouts to take the Scout promise whilst the whole world listened.
