Row over new computer system

A REPORT into the installation of a new sophisticated, multi-million pound software computer system at the Council House in Bromsgrove was criticised this week as not worth the paper it is written on.' Tory council leader, Councillor Roger Hollingworth, made the remark after studying a report compiled by the opposition Labour group on the council.

Labour maintains that it has been forced to compile the report after the ruling Conservatives refused an application by scrutiny board chairman, the Labour leader Cllr Peter McDonald, to look into the matter.

“Labour’s report isn’t worth the paper it is written on.”
Council leader Roger Hollingworth

Cllr McDonald claims that the system, known as the Spatial Project, is a financial black hole which by the end of this year will have swallowed in excess of £5m.

Started last year, he claims the system is already six months behind schedule and revenue costs have jumped from £50,000 to £250,000.

He further claims it will be outdated by the time it is up and running.

But Cllr Hollingworth hit back saying "Labour's report isn't worth the paper it is written on."

"Cllr McDonald has reverted to his old ways of casting aspersions on the integrity of council officers when he can't get his own way, "His call for a scrutiny exercise was rejected as reports on the project had already been made to full council and members had agreed the figures at January's budget meeting.

"Scrutiny is a vital tool in local government and should not be abused and used as a political weapon in the way Councillor McDonald does.

"Many of the figures in his report are wrong and not relevant to the debate on the Spatial Project. In short we totally reject it."
