Plans to block off footpath are passed

PLANS to erect a fence across a public footpath, running through the grounds of two Bromsgrove schools, have been passed, but the decision has also sparked a battle which will rage all the way to the Secretary of State.

Councillors passed the plans for a 6ft chain link fence at either end of the pathway through Meadows and Parkside schools at a district council planning committee meeting today.

Despite the decision nothing can be done until the applicants obtain a right of way diversion order in accordance with the Town and Country Planning Act.

Planning officers told the committee that as there had been a lot of opposition to any closure or diversion, a public inquiry would follow, with the Secetary of State having the final say. Read the full story in this week's Advertiser/Messenger.

The Standard reports that this footpath is now closed until September 2008 under a Health and Safety order. How come I was able to walk along the path last evening?
