BROMSGROVE firefighters attended a car fire on the M5 on Tuesday, March 18. One Range Rover was well alight when the crews arrived just after 7pm, between junctions 4a, Lydiate Ash, and 5 at Wychbold. Crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel. Firefighters were also called to a field off the A38, near the Harvester, at 8.30 on the same evening. The fire was extinguished using water back packs.

THE Bromsgrove branch of a young people's career advice service has been praised by its parent service after advising a record amount of townsfolk in their careers. Hereford and Worcestershire Connexions has thanked its staff in Bromsgrove who have enabled at least 92 per cent of town youngsters to find opportunities in education, employment and training. Connexions, which provides impartial advice, guidance and support, carried out a record number of individual contacts and interviews over the last 12 months. Lesley Taylor, who is team manager, Connexions Bromsgrove, said: "All young people need help and support at some time. We have excellent people in Connexions, totally committed to helping all young people to achieve the best they can in education, employment and training opportunities."

YOUNGSTERS at a Bromsgrove school are entitled to blow their own trumpets after delighting their parents at a musical concert Since the start of the year children in years three and four at Catshill First School and Nursery have been taking part in the Worcestershire County Council Music Project - Play to Learn. Sixty children have learnt to play the djembe drum, which is an African instrument. They have learnt complex rhythmic patterns and drumming techniques producing a fantastic range of original musical arrangements.

WEST Mercia police officers have been honoured at a special awards ceremony, which was held at their headquarters at Hindlip Hall near Worcester. Among the 18 nominees, who mostly work for the CID at Hindlip, were officers from Operation Gemini who confiscated cannabis plants from a property in Barnt Green. Proceedings are still pending. Also praised were officers who brought to book Brian Gillam, the man serving ten years for rape at The Uplands children's home in Blackwell. Detective Chief Superindendent Trevor Albutt said: "I would like to pay tribute to all those nominated for commendations. It once again demonstrates how dedicated the staff of West Mercia Constabulary are."
