CLASSICAL musician and a devoted friend of Bromsgrove Sir Philip Ledger has died aged 74.
The composer, best known for being director of the choir at King's College in Cambridge and director of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, played a large part in the Bromsgrove Festival.
He first came to the town in 1970 where he played the harpsichord at the festival, which runs during late April and early May.
Since then he has always attended.
After a distinguished career which saw him appointed CBE in 1984 and knighted in 1999 for services to music he retired in 2001.
As well as continuing to compose though, he joined the panel of well known adjudicators for the Young Musicians Platform, part of the Bromsgrove Festival.
He later became chairman of the adjudicators in 2005.
Mary White MBE, chairman the festival, described Mr Ledger as a great musician and a good friend of the town who will be sorely missed.
Sir Philip Ledger died on November 18.
He is survived by his wife Mary Erryl Wells and a son and daughter.
