Householders warned after door-to-door caller becomes threatening
7:40am Monday 14th January 2013 in News
BROMSGROVE residents are being warned to be on their guard after a door-to-door caller became threatening towards householders turning down his tree cutting service.
The male caller has being doorstopping residents in Bromsgrove, and Worcestershire Regulatory Services (WRS) say it has received reports the man has become aggressive to those refusing his gardening service.
Reports have also been made that the man, who drives a white transit flat bed van, attempts to deceive residents into thinking their neighbours have complained about overhanging trees and hedges, when actually they have not.
Residents are advised that they should not engage the services of any unsolicited callers.
If callers become threatening or aggressive, householders are advised to close the door and call 999.
Steve Jorden, head of regulatory services, said: “Unfortunately there are always a small number of individuals who think that they can bully and intimidate residents into having unnecessary work carried out on their properties.
“These individuals often target the most vulnerable in our community.
“Please say no to any unsolicited callers at your door and look out for any older or vulnerable neighbours who may be a target.”
WRS, which delivers services including trading standards, environmental health and licensing throughout the county, advise people who need work carried out on their garden or homes to always get three quotes before they start, and only use reliable tradesmen.
A list of trustworthy traders can be found on the Worcestershire Trader Register, available online at traderregister.org.uk/worcestershire or by calling 01905 765765.
To report a rogue trader call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506, or call the police’s non-emergency number 101.
