ORIENTAL culture was introduced to a Bromsgrove care home this week as part of celebrations to mark Chinese New Year.

Staff and residents at Wayside Care Home, in New Road, were introduced to rodents and reptiles brought in by mobile zoo Animal Mania - including Norman the boa constrictor - to help mark the start of the year of the snake, in the Chinese calendar.

Residents enjoyed a Chinese feast including prawn crackers, spring rolls, sesame prawn toasts and chicken in sweet and sour or black bean sauce, made by the home’s own cook Lucy Wearing.

The dining room was also decorated with paper lanterns, dragons and bamboo fans.

The home’s activities co-ordinator Sue MacFarlane, said: “Our Chinese New Year celebrations allowed residents to sample new flavours, meet some exotic animals and listen to some Oriental music.

“Most of our residents are no longer able to travel far but many have been to different countries in the past or have relatives who live abroad and events like this can prompt them to share their stories.”
