Pupils find out about local democracy
12:30pm Friday 1st March 2013 in News
Sophie Grant and James Rose talk about local issues in the council chamber at Bromsgrove District Council, with chairman Councillor June Griffiths.
PUPILS from Meadows First School in Bromsgrove had a chance to see democracy in action, when they took part in a visit to the council house.
The students wrote to Bromsgrove District Council, to ask if they could visit and find out more about how the council works.
Children sat in the council chamber, and questioned the chairman, councillor June Griffiths over a range of issues, from members’ expenses, to the role of councillors, littering, and the problem of dog mess in Bromsgrove.
Coun Griffiths said: “I am delighted that the pupils asked if they could come and visit the council house themselves.
“They asked a lot of questions and were particularly concerned with littering and mucky pups in our district because they are proud of where they live and want it to be clean and tidy.
“They also asked me what the favourite part of my job as chairman was, and I have to say that spending the morning with them was definitely one of them.”
