Townsfolk invited to next Funds for Lauren fund-raiser

AN event showcasing talented musicians is set to further boost a campaign supporting a Bromsgrove teenager struck by a rare condition.

North Bromsgrove High School pupil Lauren Rowles suffers from Transverse Myelitis, a rare disease of the central nervous system.

The 14-year-old woke up one morning in February 2012 to discover she had no feeling in her legs.

Damage to her spinal cord had led to the loss of sensation and movement from her chest downwards. Lauren is now in a wheelchair as she cannot walk.

A recent fund-raising night at Lickey End Social Club, commemorating a year since Lauren was diagnosed, was well supported and helped the campaign reach an initial £14,000 target.

Lauren needed to raise this amount for a FES bike, which will help prevent muscle wasting in her legs by increasing blood circulation, relaxing muscle spasms and providing a cardiovascular workout.

But the year 10 pupil has ambitions to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games, being held in Rio, so extra money is now being raised for the Ready charity, which helps fund the cost of sports equipment for disabled athletes.

On Thursday, March 14, her School Drive-based school is hosting a charity night.

Music from the Big Screen features talented students from North and the Birmingham Ormiston Academy - the sister school of the successful BRIT school.

Songs from James Bond and Moulin Rouge will be among those performed on the night.

Doors open at 6.45pm, with the show starting at 7.15pm.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from the school or by emailing musicfromthebigscreen@hotmail.com.

There will also be refreshments and a raffle.
