Finstall flyer backs new campaign to get women on their bikes

BROMSGROVE cycling star Jess Varnish is backing a new campaign to get town women on their bikes.

To celebrate International Women’s Day last Friday, (March 8), British Cycling announced the 22-year-old Finstall flyer has become a Breeze ambassador.

British Cycling, the governing body of the sport, launched the scheme in 2011, to tackle the barriers facing women and provide fun and free ways for them to get on a bike.

The Bromsgrove Olympian, who is targeting success in the World Cup series later this year, said: “Cycling gives you a sense of freedom like nothing else.

“I’m proud to be involved in Breeze as it’s doing such a great job in breaking down the barriers and empowering women to get on their bikes.”

Olympic silver medalist Lizzie Armitstead was also named an ambassador for the scheme.

She added: “Jess and I are encouraging as many women as possible to get on their bikes and go on a Breeze bike ride.

“Cycling is a big part of my life and I want as many women out there to experience the fun and social side.”

The majority of the rides organised by the scheme are on traffic-free routes, start or end at a cafe, and are designed with busy mums in mind.
