Council orders roof to be lowered after owners failed to get planning permission

TWO garages in Sidemoor have had to have their roof removed after it was constructed at too high a height without planning permission.

The adapted garages, which were at the rear of 68-70 Melbourne Road, were built up in January of last year, in a bid to increase living space within the properties.

However planning inspectors following up several calls of complaint, discovered that the pitched roof on the garages was approximately twice the height permitted.

The owners subsequently filed a planning application, but it was refused in April 2012, and as a result the roof had to be taken down to the permitted height.

Bromsgrove district councillor Kit Taylor, who is responsible for planning, said: “The council had received a number of complaints on this particular building and the outcome shows that they were quite justified. It’s clear that the increase in roof height should never have been built in the first place.

“This latest enforcement case also demonstrates the value of the balanced process, which often requires a certain amount of patience from all sides. The many stages of this legal process take time, but help to ensure that the rules are being fairly and consistently applied and that everyone’s rights are fully considered.”
