GENEROUS townsfolk are being asked to step up and donate their old shoes at a Bromsgrove gym for a charity scheme.

Altered Images gym, in Worcester Road, is collecting Bromsgrove residents’ old trainers.

Donated trainers will be passed on to Bromsgrove resident Billy Jones, who is a director of an orphanage in Kenya.

The orphanage is called Our Home Nakuru, which is run to provide a safe and secure home for street children and orphans.

Lara Jackson, from Altered Images, said: “Billy asked if we would mind having a basket in our gym where people can donate their old trainers, to benefit the children who are in his care.

“With a simple gesture of donating an old pair of running trainers we could help a potential world class runner take their first steps in alleviating poverty for themselves and their family.”

Mr Jones said: “Athletics is a genuine chance to escape poverty for many people in Kenya.

“Sadly, so many Kenyans with potential are falling under the radar because they cannot afford such basic equipment as running trainers, so are never able to reach their potential.”

Bromsgrove residents donating trainers don’t need to be gym members, simply visit the gym and hand them over at reception. Trainers need to be donated before the scheme’s closing date, Thursday, June 20.
