BROMSGROVE residents are being invited to Midwinter Fest, a new event being held on the day of the town’s Christmas lights switch-on.

The town’s High Street lights are being switched on outside the Golden Cross pub this Saturday, November 23.

Following the switch-on - being conducted by local triathlete Jodie Stimpson - the town’s first ever Midwinter Fest is being held.

Jodie will be leading a parade to St John’s Church, off Kidderminster Road.

The triathlete will also be bringing along her 2012 Olympic torch, so people can have their picture taken with it.

Jodie will be joined on the procession by the church’s Sunday School class, dressed as angels and shepherds, and St John’s Choir who will be singing festive songs.

The Midwinter Fest has been organised by the Friend’s of St John’s, which includes Martin Connellan who has been sponsoring Jodie.

Mr Connellan said: “We were thrilled when Jodie agreed to be part of these two great events in Bromsgrove.

“The crowds have always gathered for the Christmas light switch-on and we thought it would be a great opportunity to organise a follow on event at St John’s.”

The event is giving townsfolk the opportunity to climb the church’s tower to the turrets, to see Bromsgrove in the dark.

The tower will be open from 4pm and tickets, costing £2.50 for adults and £1 for children, can be bought in advance from the Bromsgrove Cobbler, in Church Street.

As well as the tower climb, visitors will also be able to meet Father Christmas, stock up on Christmas gifts available from crafts stalls, and discover their family history from history group members.

Refreshments will be served at The Winter Warmers Cafe, and a spooky graveyard tour is being held.

Money raised at the event will be going to the Friend’s of St John’s, which supports the ongoing maintenance and restoration needs at the ancient building.
