MEMBERS of a society, enthusiastic about the work of Bromsgrove's most famous son, commemorated the work of the famous poet at an annual event.

AE Housman, one of England's foremost poets and classical scholars, was born in Fockbury on March 26, 1859.

To celebrate his birthday last Wednesday members of the Bromsgrove-based Housman Society, which has members worldwide, organised a commemoration for his birthday.

The event is a popular one, annually held around the poet's statue in High Street.

But this year's event, in its 28th year, had to be switched to around the John Adams Memorial Cross in Bromsgrove Cemetery because of the work in High Street.

The location was chosen as Mr Adams was the great uncle of town poet AE Housman. He also built Perry Hall, today known as Housman Hall.

Among those in attendance at the event were council dignitaries, society members and society chairman Jim Page.

Guest for the day was Julian Hunt, who gave a talk on Housman.

Following the event, everyone went to Bromsgrove School's Old Chapel for a buffet lunch.
