AN application to turn a former pub and Thai restaurant in Bromsgrove into a convenience store has been submitted.

Sainsbury's wants to build a convenience store on the site of the former Lime Bar and Thai Brasserie, on the corner of Stourbridge Road and Broad Street.

The supermarket giant has submitted its plans for a Sainsbury's Local to Bromsgrove District Council, and is also expected to submit an application for an alcohol license.

The restaurant closed at the site earlier this year. Previously the site has been the Hundred House pub, and The Merlin before that.

The store would not be opened 24-hours, only from 7am until 11pm.

The proposals would create 20-25 full and part time jobs.

The site is being leased from Punch Taverns, who would continue to be responsible for the first floor of the building off Broad Street.

As part of the application, work to update the outside of the building and the car park, to install the required plant for the building, would be carried out.

In a letter to nearby residents, Sainsbury's stressed it wanted to be a "good neighbour", and planned to make a "positive difference to the community".

It added the store will be selecting a local charity, which it will support through fundraising and volunteering.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We have developed plans for a new convenience store and have submitted a planning application to the local council.

“We hope to hear the decision over the summer.

“The new store will provide a range of products and play an active role in the community, creating around 25 local jobs, as well as raising monies for local charities and schools.”
