THE family of a Bromsgrove youngster, recovering after brain surgery on a tumour, are supporting a charity campaign raising money for the hospital where he was treated.

Finlay Church, 10, was admitted to the to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with a suspected abscess on his brain but following brain biopsy, on Wednesday, June 18, it was found to be a malignant brain tumour.

He had major surgery, on Friday, June 27 to remove the cancer and is now recovering but will need radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments to prevent it from growing back.

His father Wayne said: “Finlay is very mature for his age and currently he has only shown a couple of tears. He is really pleasant everybody who meets him thinks he is just a really nice boy.

“He is a credit to our family. Considering what he is about to embark on, he has show amazing strength of character, he is a very positive kid.”

Initially the family, who live in Birmingham Road, Alvechurch, did not want to go to the hospital but when they arrived they were relieved to see the hospital had some of the best doctors, nurses and surgeons in the world.

Wayne added: “They are absolutely amazing, the nurses, surgeons and the staff.”

Now they want to raise money for the hospital to try and help other children by supporting The Big Bandage fundraiser which encourages people to donate £1 and wear a bandage for the day.

The Ronald MacDonald family support centre helped the family by giving them free accommodation inside the children’s hospital meaning they could stay nearby Finlay.

The hospital sees 240 new cases of children with cancer with each year.

Finlay has a brother Kenzie, eight and a sister Tegan, three.

The event will take place on Friday, July 11.
