BROMSGROVE residents paused to remember those who fought in the Burma campaign during the Second World War.

The town branch of the Burma Star Association organises a Victory in Japan (VJ) commemoration service at the memorial every year, on the nearest Saturday to VJ day. The surrender of Japan effectively led to the end of the war.

This year's service, held at the Crown Close Memorial on Saturday, (August 16), was taken by Padre Canon Graham Lyall from Worcester.

Bromsgrove District councillor Helen Jones, the deputy civic head, also laid a wreath on behalf of the authority.

The memorial is unique as it commemorate the participation of services the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Worcestershire Regiment, East and West African forces, the men that fell at the battle of Imphal, and the men that died as Japanese prisoners of war.
