A BROMSGROVE mum who campaigned for years to get safety measures imposed at her son’s school was left ‘furious’ when she discovered workmen had finally painted double yellow lines near the school but not where she had expected.

Mrs Amanda Baldwin, the chairman of Sidemoor First School’s Parents and Teachers’ Association, said she had been told by both the head of the highways agency and Councillor Luke Mallett that the whole-T-junction of Grayshott Close and Greenacres Road would have lines put in place.

She added that the workmen checked their instructions for the position of the lines as they couldn’t understand why they were on the opposite side of the road to the junction for the school.

Her son, Matthew, aged eight, would now allowed to walk to school on his own but Mrs Baldwin said she cannot give permission due to the road safety issues.

Mrs Baldwin said: “Every child is walking that way and we are encouraging them to walk to school when it is not safe.

“Parents can give permission for children to walk home own their own and I live only at end of the drive but I can’t let him because it is not safe.”

Mrs Baldwin added that she had called the police on a number of occasions over the road safety problems but she said she was told they would only able to get involved when someone was hurt.

County councillor Luke Mallett said the lines were put in exactly as they had been designed and that residents were consulted on the plans.

He also added that if any residents have any ideas on how to make the area near Sidemoor First School safer then he would like them to get in touch with him.

Councillor John Smith, county council cabinet member for highways, said: “Double yellow lines were put on Grayshott Close in response to concerns from local residents about the safety of pedestrians and other motorists.

“People were parking at the junction and restricting other motorists' views which was causing safety concerns, especially around the times children were going to and from school.

“Posts have also been put up to prevent parking on the grass and additional signage has also been erected to notify motorists that there is a school there as part of the aim to improve safety at this location."

A council spokesman said those with any further concerns are asked to contact the council.
