A BROMSGROVE arts centre is celebrating lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) month by holding various events and shows.

The Artrix theatre, in School Drive, is hosting the month of activities starting on Thursday, February 5.

From 6.30pm that day there will be a free family-friendly event that will include stalls, refreshments, face painting, balloon modelling and glitter tattoos.

At 7.30pm the original 1988 film Hairspray, featuring Ricki Lake, Divine and Debbie Harry will be screened.

Tickets for the evening are free and available from Artrix Box Office.

On Sunday, February 1, the National Theatre live is screening DV8s powerful production John, based on the touching true story of a troubled man and the challenges he faces.

It features adult themes and languages, and is suitable for over 18s.

On Sunday, February 8, fans of Oscar Wilde can enjoy Wilde Without the Boy, a dramatization of De Profundis, Wilde’s letter to Lord Alfred Douglas from Reading Gaol.

The production is directed by award-winning Gareth Armstrong and performed by Gerard Logan.

Artrix Learning and Engagement is also working with North Bromsgrove High School to offer year nine and 10 students workshops designed to address the current issue of homophobic bullying in schools.

The Birmingham-based company, Round Midnight, will also be performing its show Straight Talking.

An Artrix spokesman said: "It’s vital that young people are made aware of issues around equality and that their comments to others can have a powerful effect.

"Bullying of youngsters who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can have tragic consequences and it needs to stop.

"I am very pleased that North Bromsgrove High School with the support of the council and LGBT Unison are able to host this show and workshops."

Bromsgrove District Council is also supporting LGBT month, holding events and displays across the district in libraries and public spaces.
