A HEART patient from Bromsgrove is going the extra mile to raise funds for charity.

Tim Hawkesworth is joining other walkers for a stroll along the banks of the River Severn for the Worcester Heart Walk.

Walkers raise sponsorship to take part in the walk, to support British Heart Foundation's (BHF) Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, which funds ground-breaking research that could help the heart heal itself.

The last time the walk was organised, Tim had already arranged a holiday in Scotland. Determined to be part of the event, Tim instead took part in a one-man Scottish version covering the same distance in more gruelling terrain, despite his considerable heart problems.

Since then he has gone on to be a busy fundraiser for the charity, as a member of the Worcestershire BHF Fundraising Group.

Tim said: "Advance registration for the 2015 Worcester Heart Walk is now open and we are calling on local people to help make it a success.

"The charity had great support last time from people who knew others with a heart condition and everyone said it was a lovely atmosphere.

"I hope that people will show their heart is in the right place again and come and join us.”

Donna Stokes, BHF fundraising manager, said: “This is the second time this event has taken place and on the last occasion, in 2013, around 100 people took part and raised over £5,600 for the charity.

"This event is an excellent opportunity for people to show their support to get together with friends, family, colleagues or simply challenge yourself."

The Worcester Heart Walk is over a three mile distance, and is being held on Sunday, April 26.

The check in desk opens at 9.30am, with the walk starting at 10.30am from Worcestershire County Cricket Club, in New Road.

The circular route alongside the river is on flat gravelled paths and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Adult advance entry is available until April 16 and costs £5. After that date, entry will cost £8 - including on the day registrations.

Children can enter free but must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
