BROMSGROVE'S MP has been visiting a town-based hospice.

Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, visited Primrose Hospice and thanked more than 400 volunteers for their efforts.

The visit to the St Godwald's Road-based venue came at the end of the nationwide Volunteer's Week initiative - a week celebrating the role of volunteers across the country.

Mr Javid heard from the volunteers who explained their roles across the hospice, which supports people facing an end of life situation and their families during this difficult time.

One of the volunteers the MP spoke to had given 21 years of service to the hospice.

Volunteers carry out a range of roles including supporting patients, offering counselling and complimentary therapies, adminstration and reception roles, gardening, working in the charity's six charity shops, and singing in the Primrose Choir.

Without the help of its volunteers, Primrose Hospice would be unable to continue providing its services for free.

The hospice receives just 20 per cent funding from the NHS, and relies on raising more than £1.6 million per year in fundraising.

During the visit Mr Javid also met Trevor the dog a popular dog among patients at the Coppice Centre, as well on social media with his weekly feature #TrevorTuesday.
