A RUBERY reggae star is showing his support for an ex-British soldier from Bromsgrove who has been jailed for 50 years.

Lance Whitmore was arrested with an Australian friend in the coastal resort of Pattaya, Thailand, 10 months ago where officers found them in possession of 200 tablets.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to possession of drugs and his family hoped this would mean he was given a lenient sentence.

But in June the Advertiser reported on Lance receiving a sentence of 50 years with no chance of parole.

It means he will not be released until 2065 - when he is 77 years old.

Lance's mum, Debbie Caswell of Rowan Close, described the sentence as "beyond crazy", and worried it could be extended if a fine of £25,000 is not paid.

After hearing the story singer and producer Meddy Ranks has decided to support the family by organising a benefit gig.

The event is being held at The Grove pub, in High Street, on Sunday, August 30.

Meddy said: "I saw the family are crying out for help financially, so organised the gig.

"We want to raise awareness of his story - and the consequences of drug issues abroad.

"We know he did wrong, but 50 years is not an appropriate sentence - murderers have had less."

The event will feature various reggae acts and Meddy is inviting others to perform on the night and show their support.
