BROMSGROVE MP was the keynote speaker at a recent dinner held by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) Appeal.

Sajid Javid, who is also the Business Secretary, appeared at the event which took place at the Guildhall in London on September 7.

The dinner raises money for the trust, enabling it to carry out the important work, educating young people in schools and communities across the country, about the Holocaust and the important lessons to be learned today.

During his speech Mr Javid praised the work of the trust, and talked about the impact that visiting Auschwitz as part of the trust's lessons from an Auschwitz Project had on him.

At the dinner he said: "The climate of intolerance can be turned on its head - and for 27 years that is exactly what the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) has been doing.

"In schools, in the media, in the streets, HET helps us not just to remember the past but, just as importantly, to learn from it.

"I’ve long been a supporter of your work and in 2011 I got a new appreciation for what you do when I accompanied a group of students from Bromsgrove on a Lessons from Auschwitz visit.

"Tonight I call on every decent Briton, whether you’re of any faith or none, to join us all in the fight against extremism and anti-Semitism.

"I call on everyone here today to support the HET, and to give the memory of the Holocaust a place within your walls. Because it happened. And it falls to us to see that it never happens again.

Guests also heard from Sir Peter Bazalgette, chairman of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, which is overseeing the recommendations of the Prime Minister's Holocaust Commission announced in 2013.

There was also the premier of the new appeal film that reflects on the past year, when HET helped to mark 70 years since the end of the Holocaust.
