SCOTTISH prosecutors have announced they wish to interview two Libyans they have identified as new suspects over the Lockerbie terrorist attack - which killed the daughter of a former Bromsgrove doctor.

Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was among the 270 victims killed in the atrocity, has spent decades attempting to uncover the truth.

Scottish Prosecutors believe two suspects were involved, along with Abdelbaset al-Megrahi - the only person to have been convicted of the 1988 atrocity.

Megrahi was released in 2009 on compassionate grounds and died in 2012, protesting his innocence.

In a statement, the Crown Office spokesman said: "The Lord Advocate and the US Attorney General have recently agreed that there is a proper basis in law in Scotland and the United States to entitle Scottish and US investigators to treat two Libyans as suspects in the continuing investigation into the bombing of flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie.

"The Lord Advocate has today, therefore, issued an International Letter of Request to the Libyan Attorney General in Tripoli which identifies the two Libyans as suspects in the bombing of flight Pan Am 103.

"The Lord Advocate and the US Attorney General are seeking the assistance of the Libyan judicial authorities for Scottish police officers and the FBI to interview the two named suspects in Tripoli.

"The two individuals are suspected of involvement, along with Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, in the bombing of flight Pan Am 103 in December 1988 and the murder of 270 people."

In the aftermath of the tragedy Dr Swire, formerly of Pikes Pool Lane, became the most prominent spokesman for British families affected by the attack, speaking on behalf of the UK Families Flight 103 Group.

Dr Swire has always argued Megrahi was used as a scapegoat and that Libyan involvement could be a side issue.

The victims family group recently appealed the verdict against Megrahi as they didn't believe the evidence that led to his conviction is correct.

Dr Jim Swire told the Advertiser: "I have always said we know Megrahi was not involved - the evidence he was convicted on was not sound.

"Megrahi's involvement is the sole base for the naming of these two individuals.

"There is no known evidence against them, to link them to Lockerbie.

"Having said, no one would be happier than me for these two to be investigated, if there is new material, and for them to go on trial.

"This has been going on 27 years - all the families want to know is the truth."
