BROMSGROVE MP Sajid Javid has welcomed a new House of Commons rule on what has become known as ‘English votes for English laws’, which will see a majority of English MPs needed to give approval on any English matters raised in the house.

The vote, which passed by 312 votes to 270, is asking that even though every MP will still have a vote on every bill passing through the House of Commons, for new bills which only affect England, a majority of English MPs will be needed to consent on debate, as part of what will be called the ‘Grand Legislative Procedure’.

The move follows comments made by the Prime Minister David Cameron directly after the result of the Scottish referendum last year.

Sajid Javid said: “This is a welcome step towards fairer voting for the whole family of British nations. I’m sure that all of my constituents who’ve been in touch will be pleased that finally the English will determine those matters which only affect them.”
