APPLE is warning iPhone users not to fall for an internet hoax that claims to give phones a retro layout but in reality breaks the phone beyond repair.
A fake advertisement tells viewers that changing the date on their mobile phone to 1 January 1970 will change the design view on the device.
Instead, the phone refuses to reboot when turned off and restricts phone users to the Apple home screen.
The glitch was discovered last week but the hoax has been shared on social media, encouraging more Apple users to change their date settings.
The bug can also damage other Apple devices including iPad Air, Mini 2 and iPhone 5s onwards.
Apple have confirmed the issue and are set to release a software update to fix the problem.
iPhone users that have fallen for the hoax are encouraged to visit their local Apple store to speak to a specialist.
