MPs have met with Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt following fears Redditch's Alexandra Hospital is set to be downgraded.

Redditch MP Karen Lumley and Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid, with others MPs, have been in talks with the Health Secretary following news The West Midlands Senate has finished its review looking into the future of county wide care.

The Advertiser revealed yesterday that the Future of Acute Hospital Services in Worcestershire's proposed clinical model, one repeatedly attacked as ill-conceived and unbalanced by campaigners, has been given the go-ahead.

The model was drawn up by clinicians from across Worcestershire including GPs, hospital doctors and nurses and it has been tested with national experts.

Under the proposals, Redditch will have an adult only A&E with arrangements for managing a seriously sick child if they arrive unexpectedly or their condition deteriorates and they need an inpatient stay in hospital.

Consultant-led births with antenatal and post-natal care, inpatient care for children, emergency surgery will be centralised at Worcester.

There will also be the separation of emergency and planned care and the creation of centres of excellence for planned surgery.

During the meeting with Mr Hunt Mr Javid said that constituents’ priority was a functioning NHS they could rely on.

"After years of uncertainty for everyone involved, we need a clear and well-communicated plan to deliver stability for services, medics and patients alike," he said.

"It’s time to turn a new page and get the Alex back on track."

Speaking after the meeting he said: "I’m pleased that the Health Secretary recognises the urgency of our case.

"Now that the West Midlands Clinical Senate has approved a county plan, it’s important that there is proper consultation followed by swift implementation. This is crucial for patients and for staff."

The model will now be forwarded to NHS England for assurance before being put to public consultation sometime later this year.
