ALVECHURCH moved up to sixth spot in the Midland League Premier Division but it should have been even higher after they let rivals Sporting Khalsa off the hook.

Two goals from prolific striker Josh Marsh in the opening eight minutes put the Church firmly in command.

Former Church player Luke Shearer pulled a goal back for Khalsa before half time and then David Meese headed an equaliser.

But the Church couldn't press home their advantage in the closing 20 minutes after Khalsa had Craig Bannister sent off following a couple of yellow cards.

Disappointed Church boss Ian Long admitted: "At 2-0 up, you'd expect us to go on and win the game, especially after they went down to 10 men.

"But we didn't pass the ball very well and never made our numerical advantage tell.

"We had a couple of chances late in the game but Khalsa didn't deserve to lose."

Long is still looking for players to show more leadership qualities on the pitch.

He revealed: "I've been looking at some players to bring in, but I really want a leader to come from within.

"Mark Smith has taken over the armband for the past couple of games and there's players like James Spray and Danny Dubidats, who have both played at a higher level. I just need the existing players to contribute more."

On the plus side, Josh Marsh's brace of goals against Khalsa has taken his telly to 10 in 11 games this season and Long claimed: "I'm just pleased he turned down a move from Halesowen Town to stay with us."

Long has also added Sutton Coldfield Town right back Jamie Ashmore to his squad The Church were due to take on local rivals Studley this week in defence of their Worcestershire Senior Urn.

Church then travel to bogey side Quorn on Saturday.

Long revealed: "Church haven't beaten Quorn since they came back in the MFL and it's high time we put the record straight.

"We also want to progress in the Urn, especially as we're the holders. I'm really keen that we keep a clean sheet, build confidence and continue our unbeaten run."
