A SON from Bromsgrove will be pushing his mum, a former runner, around the Birmingham Half Marathon in her wheelchair next month, to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Rory McDermott has been running marathons in his mum Maria's name since 2013, after she was was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005.

Rory said: "My mother used to be a runner herself, which makes it far more galling to see how MS has robbed my mother of something she enjoyed so much, and most of us may take for granted - something she had no control over."

After putting himself to the test in the Bath Half Marathon, Rory says he was hooked, and has been running ever since.

He has since competed in several marathons and ultra marathons, and now has his sites set on reaching the 100 Marathon Club.

Rory and Maria will be taking on the Birmingham Half Marathon on October 16, but not before a few weeks of training.

The pair have been tackling some 10km routes along the canal path in Bromsgrove to practice pushing Maria in her chair.

Rory said: "Running long distances is a massive challenge in itself, but to push someone around in a wheelchair ups the ante somewhat, but I will not falter, and we will not fail to cross that finishing line together."
