THE Bromsgrove Labour Party has become an official member of the Labour Animal Welfare Society, which tackles issues such as live animal transport, factory farming and the protection of marine mammals.

The animal welfare group works closely with MPs, MEPs and members of the Welsh Assembly and Scottish Parliament.

The chairman of Bromsgrove Labour Party, Cllr Michael Thompson, who is a vegan and animal rights activist, succeeded in passing a motion through full council in April to ban animal circuses and animals as prizes on council-owned property.

He said: "I am pleased that the local party has associated itself with this group. LAWS are currently involved in shaping Labour’s national policy on animal welfare and I hope, through this membership, Bromsgrove can have its say."
