THE memory of remarkable Finlay Church, an Alvechurch boy who raised more than £100,000 for charity, has been honoured with a memorial garden.

11-year-old Finlay sadly died of a Brain Tumour after a 17 month battle with cancer on November 25 2015.

Mosaic artist Jackie Nash, with help from her builder husband Elliott, has created the garden at Alvechurch Middle School, using the students' drawings.

Finlay's friends designed 22 stepping stones which now line a long pathway leading to the main garden.

Mrs Nash also worked with Finlay's family to design a central mosaic located in the middle of white gravelled angel wings, designed by the pupils.

The family used images and words conveying how they remember Finlay and the central mosaic is bright orange -his favourite colour.

The project was funded by Mrs Nash with some materials donated by EH Smiths, Webb's and Tilemaster Adhesives.

Mrs Nash said: "I was so inspired by his achievements and deeply saddened by his story, that I wanted to pay tribute to him. He dedicated himself to helping others, despite all that was happening to him and incredibly raised £100,000 for Brain Tumour Research and the Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"We want to pay tribute to Finlay as well as continuing to raise awareness of Brain Tumour Research. Brain Tumour Research currently only receives 1 per cent of national funding yet is the biggest serious cancer threat to UK children.

"I am hoping our garden venture will help to continue to raise awareness of this horrible disease."

Finlay, who previously achieved a Guinness World Record for having the most teddy bears and was crowed Child of Courage at the Pride of Birmingham Awards in 2015, was honoured posthumously im May with a Guinness World Record for having the longest line of hats.

The garden was unveiled on Friday December 2 at a private ceremony at the school.
