THREE young Bromsgrove residents have been chosen to act as youth ambassadors for global anti-poverty group The ONE Campaign.

Former South Bromsgrove High School pupils Olly Kay, 19, and Emily Watkins, 20, and current student Megan Bassi, 17, will join 47 other youngsters from across the country to campaign for international development.

Emily said: "I am super excited to start campaigning and raising awareness of development issues. Development aid does so much good in the world and I’m really proud of what we have achieved so far.

"We’ll be calling for more action on girls’ education in the world’s poorest countries as we believe that every child has a right to education, regardless of their gender or the country they live in.”

The trio are now looking to meet with town MP Sajid Javid, and will be taking part in a 'lobby day' in March, where they will travel to Westminster to meet with key ministers in an attempt to draw their attention to the cause.

Saira O’Maille, interim UK director of ONE said: "We’ve got an outstanding team of youth ambassadors this year. They will be campaigning for a fairer world by mobilising in their communities and demanding their MPs and leaders hear their call to end extreme poverty."

Mr Javid gave his congratulations to the group, adding: "The UK taxpayer spends billions each year to help tackle global challenges including lifting people out of extreme poverty.

"As the next generation of world leaders, the role of youth is incremental in addressing these challenges."
