THE latest event in the 'Know Your Breed' series proved a success for owners of Frenchies and pugs.

The meet-up, hosted at Clent Hills Vets on Monday, July 10, was organised in response to recent media coverage on the health problems associated with flat-faced dogs.

Thirty local pet owners turned out to mingle with fellow breed owners, ask questions to an expert panel and learn ways to improve the wellbeing of their furry friends.

Head vet and practice partner Rod Stroud joined Luan Cinque from Purina Foods and Alex Imerfreys from VetPlus to offer advice.

Topics covered included surgical procedures to tackle breathing difficulties, skin infections, spinal and eye problems.

Dr Stroud said: "I would like to see the breed standards change but at the moment we have a responsibility to care for these pets and provide the appropriate treatments to improve their quality of life. Pugs and French bulldogs are such lovely little dogs, very sociable and happy.”

Rubery dog owner Hazel Laughey added: "Everyone was really knowledgeable. I thought it was an excellent evening. Rod was exceptional. He was so passionate you could tell he really cares about the breeds.”

The Kidderminster Road practice's next meet-up on Thursday, September 14 will focus on cavalier King Charles spaniels.
