FEARS for the safety of children on a junction outside a school in Bromsgrove have been addressed with new road markings, following a number of “near misses”.

North Bromsgrove High School have paid for the markings due to concerns over increasing traffic on the junction of School Drive, which is shared with New Beginnings Nursery.

The initial layout had given priority to the nursery car park located on HoW College, with a give-way located on the entrance to North Bromsgrove High School.

But the flow of traffic and bend in the road meant cars often mistakenly drove into the school’s car park, leading to concern for the safety of pupil’s crossing the road.

School headteacher Angelina Robin-Jones said: “There have been a number of parent complaints via social media and we have had concerns about the flow of traffic.

“It has been increasing markedly since the arrival of the nursery and we were becoming quite concerned about the safety aspect of the road.

“The way the road bends was not making it clear that it is going somewhere else and people were driving into the school.

“I joined the college in January and realised quickly that this was a concern for us and parents, so the only way to sort it was by altering the road markings.

“We needed to make sure it was clear where the traffic goes as my view was that somebody was going to be in an accident. We had a number of near misses which shored up my feelings.”

The new markings allow priority flow of traffic into North Bromsgrove High School, with a stop line located on the exit to New Beginnings Nursery.

Ms Robin-Jones added: “We have got a couple of responses already from one parent who said it is excellent news and another thanking us for making a stance for road safety.”
