JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is being adapted for television by Amazon.

The new screen effort will transport fans to the fictional setting of Middle Earth as it explores new storylines preceding The Fellowship Of The Ring, the first part of Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy.

The streaming service has acquired the global television rights to the fantasy novels with a multi-season commitment, which also includes a potential spin-off series.

A FORMER Cagney And Lacey star has said if a rebooted version of the show featured a black actress the characters’ names should be changed.

The hit TV drama about two female police officers was hugely popular in the 1980s – so much so that one of its original cast members Sharon Gless says US channel CBS has expressed an interest in rebooting the show.

THE latest episode of Blue Planet II has been the most successful of the series so far.

Sir David Attenborough’s wildlife series returned to screens on Sunday night for the third instalment, and it attracted an average audience of 11 million viewers, according to overnight figures.

The hour-long BBC One broadcast about coral reefs peaked at 11.3 million viewers, and had a 45% audience share.
