A SCHOOL in Barnt Green will be hosting more of its lessons outside, after the launch of a new £12,000 outdoor learning centre.

The facility at St Andrew's First CE School, which is designed to look like a railway station, was funded by Tesco's Bags of Help initiative.

Teacher Sophie Rowan said: "We are absolutely delighted with the space and it’s been a massive hit with the kids as well. The children take part in lots of activities outside through the year so improving the space was vital to the children’s learning opportunities.

“Children love the freedom of working and playing outside, and this area has made that much more achievable for everyone."

The grant was funded by the sale of carrier bags, with votes from shoppers at the Hewell Road Tesco Express using the blue tokens provided at checkouts.

The new facility, which features sun shade canopies, seating areas and a soft resin floor, has replaced the school's old garden area, which was muddy and difficult to maintain.

It has been designed by Worcestershire-based creative landscaping firm Gardens of Reflection to provide a relaxing space for pupils to learn, with the aim of supporting their mental health and wellbeing.

Younger students have also used the area to act out stories involving trains, including a 'Santa Express' performance, following the school's Christmas trip to Severn Valley Railway.

A commemorative plaque, donated by Tesco, has since been unveiled as a permanent record that the project was chosen and backed by the Barnt Green community.

Farzana Kausar, community champion at Tesco, joined St Andrew's staff and pupils for the unveiling.

She said: "It’s wonderful to see this project come to life, showing first-hand how a Bags of Help grant can have a positive impact on local communities.

"There has been great enthusiasm for the scheme from both Tesco colleagues and our customers, and it’s amazing to know that many children for years to come will be able to benefit from the project.”
