An attacker threw a grenade at the US Embassy in the capital of Montenegro and then killed himself with another explosive device.

The area in Podgorica was sealed off by police, and the embassy warned Americans to avoid the area because of “an active security situation”.

Two lorry drivers are due to face trial on Thursday for a horrific crash on the M1 in which eight people died.

Polish national Ryszard Masierak, 32, and Briton David Wagstaff, 53, will appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court, accused of causing the collision on August 26 last year.

Minibus driver Cyriac Joseph and seven of his Indian passengers were killed on the southside of the motorway near Milton Keynes as they travelled to London from Nottingham.

A wave of strike action in a bitter row over pensions is getting under way at universities across Scotland.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are planning 14 days of action this month and in March, building towards a week-long walkout by staff.

The action, described as “very disappointing” by university bosses, is beginning on Thursday with union members effectively embarking on a five-day walkout, covering Thursday and Friday of this week and Monday-Wednesday of the following week.
