SUPPORTERS of a campaign for women's economic empowerment met with MP Sajid Javid to discuss gender equality.

Emily Watkins, 21, and Meg Bassi, 19, are both youth ambassadors for the One Campaign's Women's Economic Empowerment initiative, which forms part of the Poverty is Sexist Campaign.

Emily said: "Women’s economic empowerment is really important. Poverty is sexist, disproportionately hitting women in the world’s poorest countries the hardest.

"When women are empowered economically, more money is spent on health and education, and invested into businesses."

The campaign calls on politicians and leaders to promote the empowerment of women and girls through education, health care and economic opportunities.

Mr Javid said: "It was great to catch up with my constituents, Emily Watkins and Megan Bassey, who are both youth ambassadors for the One Campaign.

"Their work is so important, and we had a really good discussion about the UK overseas aid budget and global gender equality.”
