A PENSIONER’s efforts to get an access road resurfaced in Charford, after his car got stuck in a pothole, have hit a brick wall, as talks about who is responsible continue.

Jim Verhaeg, 68, who lives in Bromsgrove's Hill Top ward, contacted the Advertiser after his Yaris stalled in one of the holes off Gilbert Road earlier this month.

He said: "I was stuck there thinking blimey, how am I going to get out? Thankfully I was able to after a couple of attempts, but the state of that access road is absolutely disgraceful.

"I counted 24 potholes in that small area, which is about six or seven metres long.

"Trying to manoeuvre around those holes is dangerous. Plus when it rains they fill with water and you can't tell where they are.

"It's an accident waiting to happen."

Both Worcestershire County Council and the Co-op have denied responsibility for the access road, although the Co-op said it would be writing to the shop's landlord.

Bromsgrove District Housing Trust (bdht) confirmed it would be responsible for managing the resurfacing work, but said it would not be willing to foot the bill.

Bdht director Barry Stevens said: "The landlord of the Co-op store is responsible for 90 per cent of the cost, so we are working with the Co-op to move this forwards as quickly as possible.

“Without their agreement on their financial responsibility, we are unable to begin the resurfacing work as we are not willing for this cost to be passed on to our customers.

"In this instance, we may be forced to block vehicular and pedestrian access to this piece of road, and ultimately to the store, which will obviously cause significant inconvenience.”
