A HUSBAND accused of murdering his wife has denied suggestions that drinking alcohol made him uncontrollably angry – but admitted swearing at a woman who left his door open.

Clark, of Cloverdale, Stoke Prior, denies murdering 44-year-old Melanie Clark after sharing three bottles of Prosecco on New Year's Eve.

Addressing a jury on the second day of his evidence at Birmingham Crown Court today (Friday), Clark was asked about an incident alleged to have occurred after he had been drinking in 2015.

Clark, who said he could not recall the date of the incident, was asked by prosecutor Benjamin Aina QC: "Would you agree that if you were drinking alcohol your anger could be uncontrollable?"

Clark replied "No sir", before saying of the incident in which a visitor left the lounge door open: "They were making a point of it. They were not my friends, they were my wife's friends."

The 49-year-old defendant, who grew up in South Africa and moved to the UK with his wife in 2011, added: "I didn't slam the door in her face - she had already gone to the kitchen."

During his evidence, Clark rejected claims that his ‘insulting behaviour’ had been one reason for the breakdown of his relationship with his wife, as well as the fact he had few friends.

The former military medic admitted that his wife had expressed concern after he used bad language towards her children, including an occasion when one of them could not lift a heavy box.

Clark, who is alleged to have been around double the legal drink-drive limit when Mrs Clark was stabbed once in the chest, said: “We all had bad language in the house, I'm afraid.”

Prosecutors say Clark stabbed his wife to death after taking part in a drinking game - and then repeatedly asked armed police to shoot him.

The trial continues.
