Star ratings for clean restaurants

CHOOSING a clean restaurant in which to dine in Bromsgrove will be as easy as pie in future thanks to a new stars on the doors' scheme.

Bromsgrove District Council is joining forces with other district councils throughout Worcestershire to give foodies' the chance to make informed decisions on where to eat in the county by publishing a simple star rating on food outlets The scheme, which has already proved successful in Gloucestershire, gives an easy to understand star rating from 0-5 for restaurants and food businesses based on their food hygiene levels.

“I'm very pleased our idea has been adopted and residents will be able to judge for themselves at a glance if their chosen restaurant or cafe meets cleanliness standards.”

Councillor Peter McDonald

However, it is thanks to an idea put forward more than a year ago by the opposition Labour group on Bromsgrove District Council that the scheme has come to fruition.

Leader, councillor Peter McDonald (Waseley), said: "I'm very pleased our idea has been adopted and residents will be able to judge for themselves at a glance if their chosen restaurant or cafe meets cleanliness standards."

Ratings will go live on 28 January on the council's website at www.bromsgrove.gov.uk.

Businesses will also be given a certificate - which they can choose to display.

District councillor Peter Whittaker, (Con-Tardebigge) portfolio holder for strategic housing and environment, said: "This star rating system gives the public on-line access to food hygiene inspection results for food businesses throughout the district.

"The published score is based on the conditions found during the latest inspection by our officers and the business's overall attitude to food safety.

"This Scores on Doors scheme is designed to act as an incentive for businesses to achieve the highest possible standards of hygiene by rewarding the best with the public recognition they deserve.".

Businesses with low ratings will not be left out in the cold but will be offered advice and help on how to improve their scores.

The scores are: Excellent, five stars; very good, four; good, three; broadly compliant two; poor, one and very poor, zero.
